FILM PROGRAM AND NEW AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT
Art Slope ’17 Shorts in the Slope is pleased to present 30 unique films – representing a talented group of filmmakers from locations as varied as Kurdistan, Spain and Brooklyn’s own Sunset Park. (Please see below a list of our featured films and filmmakers, and the dates and times of their screenings). We are particularly excited to be featuring two films by noted photographer Duane Michals, who will address the audience after the Saturday night screening, before a filmmaker Q&A with the audience.
Shorts in the Slope is also pleased to present a special matinee showing of the seminal, independent film, "Little Fugitive," which will be introduced by the filmmakers' daughter, Mary Engel. Francois Truffaut famously said that this award-winning 1953 work was a key inspiration for the French New Wave.
Following the Friday, October 13th screening, we will meet for a filmmaker's meet and greet at The Kings Beer Hall located at 84 St. Mark's Pl, Brooklyn, NY 11217
Immediately following Saturday's 8PM screening, we will hold an awards ceremony and closing party at ShapeShifter Lab – a cutting-edge music and arts space in the nearby Gowanus arts district: http://www.shapeshifterlab.com/
We will present awards for three categories: best documentary short ($500 + trophy), best narrative short ($500 + trophy), and a special award of a trophy + $1,500 of color grading services provided by Nice Shoes, a leading post-production studio. The trophies themselves are custom designed and created by Brooklyn artist Myra Kooy.

Art Slope ’17 'Shorts in the Slope' film festival is an initiative of the Arts Committee of the Park Slope Civic Council, which has sought to enhance the lives of Park Slope residents and visitors since 1896. The inspiration for 2017’s film festival, our first, came out of September 2016’s popular 9-day neighborhood-wide arts festival, 'Art Slope 2016,' which featured the work of over 150 artists from across all disciplines, in over 50 venues, including 9 large installations in Prospect Park. Art Slope 2016 attracted visitors from all over the City and beyond for music, dance, theater, visual art in all media, literary readings, and art panels (Please visit the following link for more information: http://www.artslope.nyc/2016/artists-1/).
One of Art Slope 2016’s most popular events was “Shorts in the Slope,” a 90-minute program of 12 short films, many of which had been featured at prominent festivals, and which were selected by filmmaker Bill Schaumberg. Shorts in the Slope 2016 was held at the new, state-of-the-art 315-seat Marlene Clary Performance Space of the Berkeley Carroll School.
